Web Apps

Sometimes no standard software fits. Then we build your own. Web apps from Fox Computers map exactly how you work: customer portals, booking and calculation tools, internal dashboards. Well thought out, secure and available anywhere in the browser. So you work more efficiently instead of awkwardly adapting to someone else’s tools.

01

Why a custom web app is often the better solution

Standard software is built for the average. As long as your processes are average, that works well. As soon as they aren’t, the workarounds begin: Excel lists alongside the system, duplicate data entry, detours everyone on the team knows and nobody questions any more. This friction costs time every day, and it grows with the business. At some point, a tool that maps exactly how you work becomes cheaper than muddling along with five tools that don’t fit together.

A web app runs in the browser, without installation, on any device. Your team, your customers or your partners can access it from anywhere, and updates are instantly there for everyone. What used to be possible only for large companies with their own IT is now realistic for SMEs: a customer portal, a booking tool, a configurator or an internal dashboard that does exactly what you need and nothing that slows you down. The difference shows every day in your team’s routine.

02

What Fox Computers delivers with web apps

We start with your specific problem, not with a technology. Which steps take the most time today? Where do errors happen? Who needs which information, and when? From these answers, we design a solution that targets exactly those points. The result is an application that is intuitive to use, because it mirrors your process and not that of some outside vendor. Security, speed and maintainability aren’t extras, but the foundation we build every feature on.

You get an application that runs reliably day to day, grows with your requirements and connects to your existing systems through clean interfaces, such as CRM, accounting, inventory or merchandise management. Multi-user operation with roles and permissions is part of it, as is an interface that also works on a smartphone. And the code belongs to you. You aren’t dependent on us; on request, we hand everything over neatly documented so others can keep working with it too.

03

Who a web app pays off for

A web app is worth it when a recurring process currently runs manually, is error-prone or is spread across several tools. That applies to service providers who manage enquiries, appointments or quotes by hand. To trade and manufacturing businesses that want to offer customers a calculation or configuration. To companies that want to give partners or customers a protected area with documents, orders or status updates. And to teams that finally want to see all their key figures in one place.

SMEs in the Basel region and across Switzerland benefit in particular: those without their own IT department who still want to digitise their processes without submitting to a corporate system. If you notice that your team regularly copies data from A to B, that customers have to call for simple information, or that an Excel file has become the heart of the business, it’s time for a conversation. The sooner the process is mapped properly, the sooner it saves time.

04

Typical use cases for web apps

Customer portals are among the most common projects: customers log in, see their orders, download documents or place new orders without anyone on your side having to pick up the phone. Booking and reservation tools accept appointments around the clock and enter them straight into your calendar. Calculation and configuration tools guide prospects through an offer and give you a qualified enquiry with all the necessary details at the end, instead of a vague contact request you first have to follow up on.

Internally, it’s often dashboards that bring together data from several sources, or tools for reports, inventory management and approval processes. Interfaces are another typical case: two systems that previously didn’t talk to each other exchange data automatically from now on. We work out together which case applies to you. What matters is that the app solves one specific task really well, rather than trying to do everything at once. It’s exactly this focus that makes it useful day to day.

05

How a web app project works

It starts with a conversation about your process, how it is today and how it should be. This leads to a concept with clear priorities: what must the first version be able to do, and what comes later? We sketch the key screens so you can see early on how the application will work and have your say before any programming starts. Only then do we develop, in manageable phases that you can test and sign off one by one. That way there are no surprises at the end, just visible progress all along.

We get the essential core into use quickly and then extend it where it counts. This means you work with the app early, and your feedback flows straight into the next steps, instead of us building behind closed doors for months. Before launch, we thoroughly test features, permissions and security. After go-live, we look after the app in operation, keep it up to date and develop it further as your needs evolve. You aren’t left on your own after launch.

06

Security, data protection and interfaces

A web app often processes sensitive data: customer data, prices, internal figures. That’s why security is built in from the start and not tacked on at the end. Encrypted connections, clean user permissions, protection against the usual attack patterns and regular updates are standard. Hosting is in Switzerland or on your own premises, depending on what data protection and your requirements call for. You always know where your data is and who can access it, and you can prove it to your customers too.

Interfaces are the second key. An app that runs as an island creates new duplicate work. That’s why we connect it to the systems you already use, such as accounting, CRM, merchandise management, calendars or payment providers, so data flows automatically. Technically, we rely on modern, proven tools such as Laravel, with clear code that other developers can understand too. This secures long-term operation and keeps the app maintainable, even five years from now, when the requirements have long since changed.

07

What to expect when you work with us

Software projects rarely fail because of the technology, more often because of communication. That’s why you have a dedicated point of contact with us who knows your project from the first sketch through to operation. Fox Computers is a small team from Sissach near Basel; you talk directly to the people building your app, not to a project manager who passes your wishes along. We translate the jargon and prepare decisions so you can make them without any IT knowledge.

We tell you honestly what makes sense. Sometimes the answer is that an existing tool is enough and no custom development is needed. When we do build, it’s with binding phases and transparent costs. Whether you’re from the Basel region or another part of Switzerland makes no difference to working together: in-person meetings are possible, and remote support is just as dependable. And after launch, we stay reachable, not just after several days.

08

What a web app costs

The price depends on the scope of features, the interfaces and the number of user roles. A booking tool with a clearly defined process is a different task from a customer portal connected to several systems. Quoting a flat figure before we know your process would therefore not be serious. What you get is clarity: after the concept meeting, you receive a transparent quote that states what the first version can do, what it costs and what later expansion stages would involve.

We deliberately often start with a lean version. This keeps the initial investment manageable, you work with the app early, and you decide on the basis of real experience which extensions are worth it. The numbers then usually add up quickly: when a process that costs hours per week today runs automatically, or when a configurator delivers qualified enquiries instead of you having to gather them laboriously. In a no-obligation initial consultation, we show you what budget is realistic for your project.

Questions and answers

What is a web app and how is it different from a website?

A web app is an application in the browser that users get things done with, whereas a website mainly informs. Typical web apps are customer portals, configurators, booking tools or internal dashboards: they store data, run calculations, generate documents and know user roles. One example by Fox Computers is the Tiba Energie Konfigurator, which turns a few details into a ballpark quote for heating and solar as a PDF. A web app runs without installation on computers, tablets and smartphones, and updates are instantly available to everyone. It is often embedded in an existing website.

How much does it cost to develop a web app?

At Fox Computers, a web app costs from CHF 10,000, and considerably more depending on features, interfaces and the number of user roles. The starting price includes requirements and concept, UX/UI design, development, testing, and data protection and security. Extra effort comes from connections to ERP or CRM, complex calculations, multiple languages or many roles with different permissions. We often recommend starting with a lean first version and expanding it based on real usage. Extensions are billed by time at CHF 130 per hour or quoted as a separate phase.

How long does it take to develop a web app?

At Fox Computers, developing a web app takes from 8 weeks, and three to four months for extensive projects with several interfaces. The first weeks are for the concept: we clarify processes, sketch the key screens and define what the first version must be able to do. Then we develop in phases, each of which you can test and sign off. Time is often taken up not by the programming but by coordinating with third-party systems and their providers. That’s why we clarify interfaces and access as early as possible, so the planned go-live holds.

Web app or native app: which makes more sense for my business?

For most businesses, a web app makes more sense than a native app, because it costs less and runs on every device without an app store. A native app has to be developed, reviewed and updated separately for iOS and Android, and not all users install updates. A web app, by contrast, is updated centrally on the server and is instantly up to date for everyone. As a Progressive Web App, it can even be added to the home screen like an app. A native app is mainly worth it if you need deep device features such as Bluetooth or have to be present in the app store.

Can a web app be connected to my ERP, CRM or other software?

Yes, Fox Computers connects web apps through interfaces (APIs) to ERP, CRM, accounting, calendars or payment providers, so data flows automatically. The prerequisite is that your system offers an interface, usually a REST API, or can exchange data via export and import. One example is Rhy Personal: for its job board, we developed a custom plugin that pulls the open positions from the recruitment software zvoove. This eliminates duplicate data entry, and typing errors disappear. Before we quote, we review the interface documentation so the effort is estimated realistically.

What technology do you use to develop web apps?

Fox Computers mostly develops web apps with PHP and the Laravel framework, and for content-focused applications directly in WordPress. Laravel is a widely used open-source framework with a large community, a clear structure and good tools for user management, databases and interfaces. This keeps the code understandable for other developers too, and you aren’t dependent on exotic technology. On the front end, we rely on lean JavaScript so the interface responds quickly even on older smartphones. We choose the technology based on your requirements, not on preferences.

What is an online configurator and is it worth it for my business?

An online configurator guides prospects step by step through an offer and produces a ballpark quote or a qualified enquiry at the end. It is worth it if you regularly put together quotes from similar building blocks. The Tiba Energie Konfigurator by Fox Computers, for example, asks for details about the building and delivers a ballpark quote for heating and solar as a PDF; it handles up to 300 enquiries per month. Customers see straight away what to expect, and you receive an enquiry with all the necessary details instead of having to chase them up.

Where is my web app’s data stored and is it revFADP-compliant?

If you wish, your web app’s data is stored with a hosting provider in Switzerland or on your own server, compliant with the revFADP and GDPR. Fox Computers builds security in from the start: encrypted connections, roles and permissions per user, protection against common attacks and regular backups. We only collect personal data when it is needed for the purpose. We document external services such as payment or e-mail providers, so you can clearly state in your privacy policy which data goes where.

Who owns the source code of my web app?

The source code of your web app belongs to you, and Fox Computers hands it over in full and documented on request. This means other developers can also continue working on the application. So you aren’t tied to us, even though we’re happy to look after the app long term. Open-source building blocks such as Laravel are under their own free licences and incur no licence fees. For you, this means planning certainty: the application remains your property, regardless of who develops it further in five years, and you can choose hosting and support yourself at any time.

Who maintains and extends my web app after go-live?

After go-live, Fox Computers continues to look after your web app, with updates, security patches, backups and further development as you need it. Web apps need regular maintenance, because PHP, Laravel and connected interfaces keep evolving. Smaller jobs are billed by time at CHF 130 per hour; larger extensions are planned as a separate phase with their own quote. A dedicated point of contact knows your application and is available Monday to Thursday. This keeps the app secure and growing with your processes, instead of becoming outdated after two years.
